A game server is ordered quickly. Stable server operations need more: updates, backups, clear access rights, moderation, support, and a community that knows where to find status and rules. Before you decide on hardware or a plan, you should plan the project as a whole.

Clarification requirements
Start with the game, not with a random RAM number. Different game servers load CPU, memory, data carrier and network in other ways. Mods, large saves or many entities can change the requirements more than the pure slot number.
Halte diese Punkte fest:
- Game and platform
- Planned region and target group
- Expected simultaneous players
- Vanilla, mods or plugins
- public, private or event-based operations
- Existing save or configuration data
- desired starting time
- verantwortliche Admins
- Budget for hosting and tools
Without a responsible person, even a technically good server becomes confusing. At least one person must coordinate updates, rules and escalations.
Selecting an operating model
Selbstverwaltet
Your team receives the provided administration rights and handles configuration, updates, mod maintenance and support. This provides maximum control, but requires regular technical work.
Technisch betreut
Infrastructure, monitoring, backups and certain updates are taken over. Your team takes care of game operations, community and moderation. Changes take place through a clear process.
Managed Service
In addition, facilities, ongoing technical support, training or moderation workflows may be included. The scope is agreed in concrete terms. Managed does not automatically mean unlimited work or active 24/7 moderation.
Resources, slots and location
More slots don’t just mean more RAM. Many games rely heavily on single-core performance, tickrate and server logic. Modded Minecraft requires other reserves than an HLL server or a long-term Factorio save.
Location affects the ping of the target group. For a community in the German-speaking area, a European region usually makes sense. International projects must weigh which player groups are prioritized.
Plan reserves for peak loads and updates, but don’t buy blindly oversized. Monitoring later shows whether CPU, RAM, data carrier or network actually limit.
Mods, plugins and updates
Mods extend a game, but increase the operating expense. Versions must fit together, dependencies must be documented and updates must be tested. An automatic update at the wrong time can make a server unusable or damage a save.
For modified servers, you need:
- a central mod list or collection,
- a clear update manager,
- test or maintenance windows,
- Backup before major changes,
- and a comprehensible join guide for players.
Avoid multiple conflicting modlists in Website, Discord and Launcher. One source is leading; all others link to it.
Backups, monitoring and status
A backup is only useful if it is clear what will be backed up, how long it will be kept, and how a restore will take place. Configuration, save data, databases and tool instances may require separate backups.
Monitoring checks accessibility and technical values. It does not replace game observation. A server can be online and still have a mod, voice or performance problem. Therefore, in addition to status, the website also needs a structured way for error messages.
The FLN-Statusseite shows how components and faults can be represented separately.
Administration and moderation
Technical admin rights and moderation decisions are different tasks. Not every moderator needs host access; not every technician should decide on banns alone.
Definiere:
- Roles and permissions
- Rules and reporting methods
- Handling of supporting documents
- Ban and objection process
- Support channels
- Documentation of changes
Tools like CRCON and an Report Bot Support processes. They do not replace a responsible decision.
Kosten realistisch betrachten
Additional costs can be added to the hosting price: licenses, additional tools, backup storage, domain, administration or individual setup. Cheap hosting gets expensive if your team has to handle outages and manual repairs every week.
Conversely, a small private project does not automatically need a comprehensive managed package. Choose the scope based on actual risk and existing experience.
Hosting at FLN
FLN offers standardized solutions for Hell Let Loose and CRCON as well as individually set up servers for other games. Underneath Game Hosting find the technical performance framework; CRCON Hosting is aimed at HLL communities.
For a usable request, name the game, region, slots, mods, existing data and desired support. Access data is only exchanged securely after a clear agreement.
Frequent questions about hosting a game server
Which operating model fits my server project?
What matters is who actually handles updates, configuration, backups, monitoring and disruptions. Self-management offers freedom, managed service reduces operational burden. The choice should fit the available time and experience of the team, not just the desired range of functions.
How do I plan slots, performance and server location?
Start with game, expected player count, mods, tick or simulation load, and target region. More slots alone do not automatically mean a better experience. Reserves, stable latency and measurable resource consumption are more important than the largest possible number on offer.
How should mods and updates be organized?
Use documented versions, a maintenance window, and a fallback plan. Changes should first be checked in a suitable test environment or with a current backup. Players then need clear hints about the version and join requirements.
What backups does a game server need?
Secure the state-relevant data of the game and document how a running entity is created from it again. Frequency and storage depend on the rate of change and possible loss. A restore test is more meaningful than the mere existence of an archive file.
What information does FLN need for a hosting request?
Named game, platform, number of players, mods, desired operating model, existing data and planned launch. The page Game Hosting classify benefits; which Kontaktseite leads to the appropriate request path.
How much RAM and CPU power does my game server need?
This depends on the game, slots, mods and world size. We transparently identify RAM and divided CPU cores and plan reserves for peak loads.
Why does Frontline host Gameserver in Docker?
Containers cleanly separate instances and dependencies from each other. This makes it possible to operate updates, restores and resources in a more controlled manner.
Can an existing game server move to Frontline?
Yes. We check scores, configurations and mods in advance and plan the change so that downtime and data risk remain as low as possible.
The server is only part of the project
Players do not notice how much RAM an instance has. They notice whether the server is reachable, mods fit together, rules can be found and someone takes responsibility after a problem. Therefore, plan technology, team and community ways together. A strong start without an update or backup process will later become unnecessarily expensive.
Keep track of who is administering, who is moderating and who is allowed to decide in an emergency. Also, define what data you can lose and how quickly a restore is needed. These questions seem dry before launch, but create the freedom to later develop events and game operations without starting from scratch with each disruption.
